Eating

Cheap Buffets:

We have signed up at for all of the casino's club cards. The cards give some discount, usually $1 at their buffet. Some casinos have an extra amount if you are a senior (over 55).

There are $'s off coupons in the newspaper most days and several of the Mags have coupons in them. We have so many 2 for 1 coupons that we can't use them all. One place, The Cannery, gives you another 2 for 1 coupon every time you eat there and give them a 2 for 1 coupon. You could never eat there at full price! Also, you can't cook at home as cheap as eating at these buffets. And, you have the choice of eating healthy food at the buffets-steamed vegetables, fresh green salad, fruit. Of course, you can eat unhealthy too-chocolate cake, bread pudding, cannolis, ice cream.

All prices quoted are as of fall, 2008 for "club members" and seniors.

Remember to tip at the price before your discounts. Waiting tables in Las Vegas is not the best job on the planet! We tip $1 pp which is not included in prices below

SAHARA is $8.99 for lunch as well as Supper. With card - No coupon

PALACE STATION is $6.99 for lunch as well as supper. With card - No coupon

TERRIBLE'S is $5.38 pp everyday. With card and coupon. There are always unlimited coupons for 1/2 off. Coupons are in the LVRJ every week and there are coupons at the Advertising Keos all over town.

ORLEANS is $6.45 lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday. With card and $3 coupon. There is usually a coupon in the LVJR during the week to save $3 on meals
Another coupon is in the paper for $3 off on Saturday and Sunday

SAM'S TOWN is $6.75 lunch. With card - No coupon. With 2 for 1 coupon, it is $6.75 total for two people.

CANNERY is $4.20 lunch. With card and 1/2 Coupon. The 1/2 coupons are contained in monthly publication included with LVRJ at the first of the months. At least 7 coupons for 2 for 1.

STATIONS casinos usually have some coupons. During December, they have had 2 for 1 coupons in the paper almost every day for all Station Casinos-a real deal.

Silverton has had 2 for 1 on all meals for the month of December without a coupon.

A FEW DOLLARS MORE BUFFETS:

At the 1/2 price ticket booth, you can buy a coupon for PARIS buffet. You can save $3 0r $4 dollars.

ALL AMERICAN CHOW:

Our favorite pizza in METRO PIZZA. We think the pizza class held once a month is a great deal. It is $22 but with a coupon only $16. You get Appetizers, pizza buffet, desert, beer, wine or soda.

Our favorite burger joint is IN & OUT BURGER.

Our favorite sub shop in CAPRIOTTI'S. It has several locations and we get a Turkey special with Cole slaw?

On East Fremont Street is Uncle Joe's a shop with $2 Pizza slices -thin crust

At one of the small casinos on Fremont Street, they have $1.00 Nathan's hot dogs and two French Fried OREOS for $1. Also, french fried TWINKIES.

Cici's pizza $7. No waiting, unlike most buffets.

GROCERY STORES:

We like the prepared food at Whole Foods.

We like the prepared frozen foods at Trader Joe's. Their cheeses are cheaper than Whole Foods.

Sunflower Markets have the best Meatballs to take home and cook in a skillet. Also, they have good fresh vegetables-asparagus, green beans.

"99 Cents Only" stores have all sorts of groceries and especially inexpensive produce like grapes, apples and bananas.

At a meat market on Horizion Ridge Road, we get 1/4 pound, fresh-made, hot dogs at $5 per pound.

We buy a lot of our regular groceries and staples at WALMART because you can't beat their prices.

Our Routine is generally to eat:

Light breakfast - DAC has Jimmy Dean Turkey Sausage & Cheese muffin (only 200 calories); NKO has Trader Joe's brand English Muffin or yogurt or toast.

Buffet Lunch at different casinos that offer 2 or 1 deals.

Lighter Supper at home-soup, salad, steamed vegatables, and maybe a meat/starch combo if we didn't eat enough at the lunch buffet.

15 miles away in Henderson at the EL DORADO, the CRAPS table is $1 bet every day. We like to go and gamble for an hour, break for supper, and then gamble again. Our meal consists of a BELLY BUSTER hamburger with FF's and an order of Onion Rings. We order one of each item and split the meal. With drinks, the cost is $15.00 including the $2.50 tip.

We went to the POKER PALACE in north LV. It is lower rent than Fremont street or Henderson. They had $1 blackjack. It was very smokey!

When I gamble, I always get $100 in chips using a $100 bill. I make it easy to make sure that I get the right amount, and they may think that I am a "big Dog". Last year I used 5 $20s and I thought they only gave me $80. I asked them to check the camera and they said it was only $80. The houseman making the change later said that if he had made a mistake then he would have been given a "demerit" for the mistake. I tell the story because today at El Cortez I was given $5 too much. I did not bring it to their attention. Instead I made a $5 bet for the dealers. Two things, I do not want to cheat for $5 and it is bad luck. $5 million - Ask me then!!

11-18, Today, Nancy and I took a TEXAS HOLD'EM lesson. Watch out!

New Day

We have bought a place in LV. We think that we got a good price. We paid 1/2 of the price new in June 2006. Our plan is to spend spring and fall in LV and Winter and Summer in Beulaville.

A 1,500sf loft space with 2 full baths. A master bedroom sleeping area is built out and we are planning on adding another bed room by building another wall off the living room to create a second separate from the living room and kitchen area. The master suite is about 400sf. The other bed/bath/closet will be a little smaller and the remaining area ( living-dining-kitchen-WD room) will be about 700sf. The ceilings and floor are concrete and the heating ducts and sprinkler pipes are exposed. It is a "loft" space, similar to what you would find in NYC, except at a much steeper price! There are two huge windows and a big sliding glass door to the balcony. The windows have a "Strip" view and it is spectacular.

We paid $297k. Payment is $1,353. Common Charges (hot water, heat, WS&T and building amenities) are $560 (just went down from $609). Property Tax is $600 per month. Property taxes also are going down to about $300 per month for 7-09/6-10.

We have spent about $1,500 furnishing it. I have changed out all of the ceiling lights and installed a couple of dimmers. We purchased furniture both at thrift shops and from CraigsList on the internet. The thrift shops in LV are the best, especially Opportunity Village on Main Street, The Rescue Mission on Bonanza, and The Salvation Army on Yale Avenue. At times, these places get new furniture from model homes or the furniture mart and the prices are dirt cheap for these items.

Shows that we have seen:
UNLV football vs. Air Force
LA Lakers vs. Sacromento
Neil Sedaka
Jerry Sienfeld
Bette Midler

We have purchased tickets to most shows off CraigsList on the internet. We check it out regularly to see what shows are available. Tickets are usually much cheaper than buying them at the box office, if you are willing to wait until the day of the show. For example, we got Bette Midler tickets for $50. Tickets to her show start at $100 and go up from there!
